Up Close with Nature
Main texts belonging to our nature experience exhibition "Rivers and Baltic Sea" are bilingual (german/english). The same applys to the exhibition of our famous fossil whales ("Stones tell stories").
The Museum of Nature and Environment presents a large variety of biological and geological themes, offering the visitors exciting insights into the natural history of the North and into the abundant wildlife population and vegetation in the region of Lübeck. The fossilized whale skeletons from the primordial North Sea are unique in Europe. The 14 meter long skeleton of a sperm whale from our time can be viewed in the adjacent cathedral yard “Domhof”. An exhibition of rocks and drifts invites you to a time journey through the geological eras, and real fossils can be “grasped” at the staging of a paleontological excavation site. In the nature experience exhibition “Von Flüssen und Meer (Rivers and Baltic Sea)”, habitat dioramas and interactive media stations display the biosphere and inhabitants of the local rivers and the Bay of Lübeck. Living pond turtles, grass snakes, fish, and a colony of bees are among the surprising exhibits. The “Wassertropfen (Water Drop)” lets the visitors shrink and come up face to face with water fleas. The museum is a certified educational institution of sustainability and it offers a wealth of museum pedagogical activities, lectures, seminars, vacation programs, excursions, and events. Changing temporary exhibitions highlight relevant current themes.
